Passage Two
It’s hardly surprising that weather is a favourite topic for so many peoplearound the world—it affects where we choose to live, what we wear, our moods, and perhaps even our national characteristics.Studies have shown that changeable weather can make it difficult toconcentrate, cloudy skies slow down reaction, and high humidity with hot,dry winds makes manypeople bad-tempered.
Ifyou live in a place like Britain, where the weather seems tochange daily if not hourly, you could be forgiven forthinking that the weather is random. In fact the weather iscontrolled by systems which move around areas of the globe. In the UK the weather depends on depressions, often called lows, and anticyclones, also known as highs. These systems start in theAtlantic Ocean, and make their way across the BritishIsles from the west to the east.
Highsbring sunny weather, while lows bring rain andwind. In modern times, human activities seems to be altering weather patterns.Gases produced by heavy industry change the temperature of the Earth’s surface, and affect cloud formation. Some researchers say that factories in Europe and North America may havebeen one of the causes of the droughts in Africa in the 1980s.
Thehuman race has always tried to guess the weather, especially in areas of theworld where there are frequent changes.Traditional rhymes pointto early attempts to identify weather patterns, popular poems include:
Redsky at night, shepherds? delight;Red sky in the morning, shepherds? warning.
Flieswill swarm before a storm.
Rainbefore 7,clear by 11.
Whilefolk wisdom can still provide a guide to help forecast weather, today’s methods of predictionincreasingly rely on technology.Satellites, balloons, ships, aircraft and weathercentres with sensitive monitoring equipment, send data to computers. The data is then processed, and the weather predicted. However, even this system cannot predictweather for longer than about a week.

Passage Three
Thereare many ways of defining success. It is accurate to say that each of ushas our own concept of success to the extent that each of us is responsible forsetting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goalssatisfactorily.Because each of uspossesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorable environments inwhich to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we mustdefine success broadly.
For some people, simply being able to livetheir life with a minimum of misery and suffering is considered a success.Think of the peace of mindof the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his frugal life with hisfamily in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goalsexpected of and accepted by his and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even thoughsome people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to bemiserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their ownstandards of success.Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goalsfor achieving success, but if one has self-confidence it would be unfortunate to set one’sgoals at too low a level of achievement.
A wise counselor once saidto a young man who was experiencing frustration with his own professionalsuccess: "You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order tohave success in traveling.Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the parkor riding the subway downtown," The counselor added, " You have not really failedand spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful atsomething you really like, and to which you have given you best effort."

The Real-name Train Ticket System Launched
In some southern cities, railway station offices and authorized agencies have begun sellingname-based railway tickets.Requiring a valid form ofidentification, the real-name system aims to makebuying tickets more convenient and fairer. It is also said to beeffective in curbing scalping, especially during theChinese New Year travel peak.
Though the aim ofintroducing real-name train ticket is fully justified,it has brought about some problems. One problem is the leakingof personal information.Buyers’ names and IDnumbers printed on the tickets may be used to make false certificates or forother purposes once the tickets fall into the wrong hands.Another is that the complicated system and check-in process add to thealready heavy workload of the railway workers.
In my view, the name-based train ticket system is a bold try to ensure passengers’security and an effective weapon against notorious scalping.Since it is new-born and needs time to perfect itself,we should treat fairly the current problems it brings.I believe that with people’s awareness of privacy protection enhanced, and with the development of technology, the problems will soon bethings of the past.
